Freddy Chapman

Freddy’s Journey Here:

Freddy Chapman has been a huge part of Home Furniture since he joined us at the age of 17 on August 1st, 1983. He began his career at our Lake Charles location, and since then, he has fulfilled such positions as: Delivery Helper; Driver; In-Store Repairman; Inter-Company Driver; Warehouse Manager; Assistant Manager when needed; and his current position as a regional Customer Service Technician servicing mainly the areas of Lafayette, Lake Charles, and Beaumont.

Freddy’s responsibilities consist of addressing any and all issues regarding furniture repairs and assessments; however, what wins the day is Freddy’s friendly demeanor and positive connection with our customers.

What do you like best about your job?

Before the question was finished, Freddy emphatically answered with, “Taking care of customers.” Freddy went on to say, “I love dealing with our customers. If need be, during a negative situation, I’ll let them vent, and then I’ll gain some kind of common ground with them and reel ‘em back in and make ‘em happy. If you make ‘em happy, you can save the sale! When I leave their house, they’re gonna like me and like Home Furniture. We all wear the same shirt!”

Flint Davis, Customer Relations Director, adds, “Freddy is a valuable member in our service department.  He is one of the broadest thinkers I’ve ever met regarding solving problems. He never misses a moment to teach and add value to others in our company. I still recall my first day when he explained what Home Furniture expected. I appreciated the sound advice. That teachable moment still resides deep within me today. This forerunner has paved the way for many people, including myself to be successful in our company. All his counted and uncounted contributions never go unnoticed. I believe most of us all know that there is no one better with customers than Freddy. I want Freddy to know, “Greatness costs what it costs. It never goes on sale.”

Doug Smith, Advertising/Marketing Director, adds, “I have worked with Freddy for many years in different capacities within the company, ranging from warehouse and delivery to management and customer service. We’ve been through many adventures together and Freddy has consistently maintained a positive attitude with his co-workers and customers alike. What do you like best about your job?

“One of the best things about working for Home Furniture, is my supervisor, Lori Berwick. Lori is one of the nicest, kindest people I know. She has faith in you that you can do your job, and do it without her having to micro-manage. Also, I love mastering the challenge of a big part of my job which consists of doing sales tax for all of our stores. I also like working and communicating with others in our company that deal with inventory and buying concerns.”

Lori Berwick, Home Furniture’s Chief Financial Officer, adds, “Rene has been an asset to the company since the day she started 20 years ago. She came to us with experience and was able to step into the position of inventory accounts payable right away and do the job well. She likes to learn new things.  After being with us for a few years, she also took on the task of preparing our sales tax returns. I can always count on her to do the things for which she is responsible and complete them in a timely manner. I can also count on her to help with anything that needs to be done, whether it is ordering supplies for the office, making sure we always have postage, stuffing envelopes, etc. She is a true team player, and I am glad she is on our team!”

When Rene is not at work:

“My passion is my 16-month-old granddaughter, Sophia! I would spend every weekend with her if I could! And now, we have a grandson on the way as well! I also love gathering with my family and listening and dancing to Zydeco music!”

The ONE thing most co-workers may not know:

“Something most co-workers may not know about me is that I am 17 years cancer-free. When I was diagnosed, I was only here two years, and the way I was treated throughout the process made me more than certain that I was at the right place concerning employment.”

Advice for anyone wishing to join our Home Furniture Team:

“Home Furniture is the best company to work for. Everyone is down-to-earth and approachable, regardless if it’s the owner on down. If you maintain a good work ethic, you’ll have the opportunity to go far.”

Born and raised in Lake Charles, LA, Rene resides in her hometown with Robert, her husband of 33 years. The “empty nesters” have two grown sons, Quinton and Jordan.

Customers, Coffee and Life Experiences: Damon West Shares His Story
Customers, Coffee and Life Experiences: Damon West Shares His Story

Home Furniture Plus Bedding employees from SE Texas and South Louisiana gathered on October 5 & 6, 2022 at their Corporate Office and Distribution Center, in Lafayette, Louisiana. The 2022 Sales Summit offered employees a chance to learn and grow both professionally and personally with 2 days of motivational and sales educational training.  The inaugural event was a dream come true for Chief Executive Officer Tony Kemp, Chief Operating Officer Ross Dees, and President Dwayne Arceneaux. Under the direction of Theresa Brough, the 2-day event was centered around employee development and sales training. Each day employees from all 8 locations traveled to Lafayette for a day packed with inspiration, education, and team building.

“Anytime we can offer our employees appreciation and opportunity to grow, we embrace it.
To be able to have Damon West share his message, in person,
with our employees is such a great opportunity” stated Tony Kemp, CEO.

Damon West, renowned author, and motivational speaker kicked off each day with his inspiring Coffee Bean message.  The Coffee Bean message tells the story of how he overcame the struggles associated with drug abuse, a life sentence, and recovery. While in prison a very wise man taught Damon how to survive and thrive under the extreme conditions that prison life bears by living each day like a coffee bean. Damon is passionate about the Coffee Bean message and loves sharing how it changed his life for the better and how it can change every one of us, too. According to Damon, you have 3 choices on how you can live. One is like a carrot – when the pressures of life hit, the pressure changes you and you become soft (sad and weak).  The second choice is to be like an egg – when the pressures of life hit, you change into a person with a tough exterior, becoming hard (mad and mean).  And then there is the best choice - be a coffee bean! When you live your life like a coffee bean and handle each day’s pressure like a coffee bean would, you change the world around you instead of the world changing you (positive)!  Damon’s story has been featured both nationally and globally. The Coffee Bean, co-authored with best-selling author Jon Gordon, is a best-seller and a part of Forbes’ “Top Twenty Books You Need to Read to Crush 2020.”

“Focus on what you can control. You control what you think,
what you say, what feel, and what you do.” Damon West

Guest presenters were Katie Alexander from Tempur-Pedic and Heather Dejong from Wells Fargo.  Each day several of Home Furniture Plus Bedding’s top sales professionals and most experienced team members participated in panel discussions on a wide range of furniture and mattress sales related topics.
Day one sales team panel members were:  Beau Derouen, Hannah Albers, Darren Spell, Jacob Ross, Ethan Weatherly, Casey Barnett and Matthew Burke Eastin.
Day two sales team panel members were: Sharon Ford, Paul Le, Carl Hudson, Lisa Brittain, Jay Moon and Thomas Smith.
