Bryan Parker
Distribution Center's Man of Many Hats

Bryan Parker has been with Home Furniture Plus Bedding at the Distribution Center since 2015.  He began his career as a furniture prepper but his many talents have propelled him into fulfilling many duties such as loading trucks, receiving, cleaning, and even maintaining the flower beds. Prior to joining our team, Bryan worked at the Petroleum Club in Lafayette, LA.

This “Man of Many Hats” says, “I can and have done every position needed whenever called upon except driving machinery and delivery trucks!”

Faith Dorsey, Co-Distribution Center Manager adds: “Parker wears many hats daily and his versatility speaks for itself. Whether he’s in prep; keeping our warehouse in tip-top shape, delivering furniture, or in the flower bed he takes great pride in completing all tasks efficiently. Most importantly, he does it with a smile on his face and his great sense of humor fills the room with laughter. If ever I need a task done I know exactly who to call.”

What do you like best about your job?

When asked what he likes most about his job Bryan said, “I like the atmosphere and the people. I don't come here just for the money. I love getting up in the morning, coming to work, and being the best I can be on a daily basis.”

Dwayne Arceneaux, Home Furniture Company President adds: “Bryan is an MVP within our organization. Whenever and wherever there is a need, he is always the first to step up. He approaches every task with focus and enthusiasm and takes great pride in everything he does. Not only is he one of our hardest workers, but he also brings a contagious attitude and energy to the job every day. We are lucky to have him on our team and we are proud of the way he represents our company.”

When Bryan is not at work:

When Bryan is not working he can be found fishing or spending time with his newest 5-month-old grandchild, Rylan. Bryan also says, “I love spending time at home with my fiancé Stephanie, my mom, and my siblings as well. Work, family, my grandson, and fishing. That’s my life! I also occasionally pressure wash houses and maintain flower beds as side jobs.”

The ONE thing most co-workers may not know:

“When I was 11 years old, I was the batboy for the Lafayette Drillers Semi-Pro baseball team. I was very good at baseball! I always made the All-Star team every season and at the age of 14, I was clocked by a professional scout throwing a fastball at 92 mph! I’ve always had a passion for playing professional baseball, specifically for the San Francisco Giants! Let’s just say that I would’ve been the next “Louisiana Lightning!” I still play recreational softball, and man, we compete! I also coached a 9-, 10-, and 11-year-old girl’s softball team for 6 years, and we won 5 championships out of those 6 years,” says Bryan.

Advice for anyone wishing to join our Home Furniture Team:

When asked what advice he would give to anyone wishing to join the Home Furniture Team Bryan said, “Home Furniture is a good company to work for. They care about you and your family. You can make a good career here, but it’s all up to you and how bad you want it. Remember, you gotta crawl before you can walk. You gotta earn it and NEVER give up!”

Born and raised in Lafayette, LA, Bryan resides in his hometown with his fiancé, Stephanie Boudreaux.

Freddy Chapman - Employee Spotlight
Freddy Chapman - Employee Spotlight

Freddy Chapman
Regional Customer Service Technician

Freddy’s Journey Here:

Freddy Chapman has been a huge part of Home Furniture since he joined us at the age of 17 on August 1st, 1983. He began his career at our Lake Charles location, and since then, he has fulfilled such positions as: Delivery Helper; Driver; In-Store Repairman; Inter-Company Driver; Warehouse Manager; Assistant Manager when needed; and his current position as a regional Customer Service Technician servicing mainly the areas of Lafayette, Lake Charles, and Beaumont.

Freddy’s responsibilities consist of addressing any and all issues regarding furniture repairs and assessments; however, what wins the day is Freddy’s friendly demeanor and positive connection with our customers.

What do you like best about your job?

Before the question was finished, Freddy emphatically answered with, “Taking care of customers.” Freddy went on to say, “I love dealing with our customers. If need be, during a negative situation, I’ll let them vent, and then I’ll gain some kind of common ground with them and reel ‘em back in and make ‘em happy. If you make ‘em happy, you can save the sale! When I leave their house, they’re gonna like me and like Home Furniture. We all wear the same shirt!”

Flint Davis, Customer Relations Director, adds, “Freddy is a valuable member in our service department.  He is one of the broadest thinkers I’ve ever met regarding solving problems. He never misses a moment to teach and add value to others in our company. I still recall my first day when he explained what Home Furniture expected. I appreciated the sound advice. That teachable moment still resides deep within me today. This forerunner has paved the way for many people, including myself to be successful in our company. All his counted and uncounted contributions never go unnoticed. I believe most of us all know that there is no one better with customers than Freddy. I want Freddy to know, “Greatness costs what it costs. It never goes on sale.”

Doug Smith, Advertising/Marketing Director, adds, “I have worked with Freddy for many years in different capacities within the company, ranging from warehouse and delivery to management and customer service. We’ve been through many adventures together and Freddy has consistently maintained a positive attitude with his co-workers and customers alike. He gets the job done, no matter what, and he is a great example to learn from. Freddy is a true lifelong friend and is like a brother to me.”

When Freddy is not at work:

“I love spending time with my family and doing family events, but in my spare time, my hobby is going to car shows. I love classic cars!”

Advice for anyone wishing to join our Home Furniture Team:

“Home Furniture is a great place to work for if you treat it like it’s your own. That’s something I learned early on from our founder, Ged Fleming. Also, do what you’re supposed to do and try to be the best at it.”

Born in Eunice, LA, and raised since the age of 5 in Lake Charles, LA, Freddy now resides in Lake Charles with his wife, Andrea, and their daughter, Lakyn. Freddy and Andrea also have two sons, Brandon and Antonio.

Customers, Coffee and Life Experiences: Damon West Shares His Story
Customers, Coffee and Life Experiences: Damon West Shares His Story

Home Furniture Plus Bedding employees from SE Texas and South Louisiana gathered on October 5 & 6, 2022 at their Corporate Office and Distribution Center, in Lafayette, Louisiana. The 2022 Sales Summit offered employees a chance to learn and grow both professionally and personally with 2 days of motivational and sales educational training.  The inaugural event was a dream come true for Chief Executive Officer Tony Kemp, Chief Operating Officer Ross Dees, and President Dwayne Arceneaux. Under the direction of Theresa Brough, the 2-day event was centered around employee development and sales training. Each day employees from all 8 locations traveled to Lafayette for a day packed with inspiration, education, and team building.

“Anytime we can offer our employees appreciation and opportunity to grow, we embrace it.
To be able to have Damon West share his message, in person,
with our employees is such a great opportunity” stated Tony Kemp, CEO.

Damon West, renowned author, and motivational speaker kicked off each day with his inspiring Coffee Bean message.  The Coffee Bean message tells the story of how he overcame the struggles associated with drug abuse, a life sentence, and recovery. While in prison a very wise man taught Damon how to survive and thrive under the extreme conditions that prison life bears by living each day like a coffee bean. Damon is passionate about the Coffee Bean message and loves sharing how it changed his life for the better and how it can change every one of us, too. According to Damon, you have 3 choices on how you can live. One is like a carrot – when the pressures of life hit, the pressure changes you and you become soft (sad and weak).  The second choice is to be like an egg – when the pressures of life hit, you change into a person with a tough exterior, becoming hard (mad and mean).  And then there is the best choice - be a coffee bean! When you live your life like a coffee bean and handle each day’s pressure like a coffee bean would, you change the world around you instead of the world changing you (positive)!  Damon’s story has been featured both nationally and globally. The Coffee Bean, co-authored with best-selling author Jon Gordon, is a best-seller and a part of Forbes’ “Top Twenty Books You Need to Read to Crush 2020.”

“Focus on what you can control. You control what you think,
what you say, what feel, and what you do.” Damon West

Guest presenters were Katie Alexander from Tempur-Pedic and Heather Dejong from Wells Fargo.  Each day several of Home Furniture Plus Bedding’s top sales professionals and most experienced team members participated in panel discussions on a wide range of furniture and mattress sales related topics.
Day one sales team panel members were:  Beau Derouen, Hannah Albers, Darren Spell, Jacob Ross, Ethan Weatherly, Casey Barnett and Matthew Burke Eastin.
Day two sales team panel members were: Sharon Ford, Paul Le, Carl Hudson, Lisa Brittain, Jay Moon and Thomas Smith.

Tips for Arranging a New Bedroom Set
Tips for Arranging a New Bedroom Set

Is your bedroom making you tired in all the wrong ways? Don’t let your master bedroom be a place you only want to be in with your eyes closed. Spruce up your space with a new bedroom set and rearrange your furniture with these tips from Home Furniture Plus Bedding serving East Texas and Louisiana, and check out our
inventory of new bedroom furniture. New arrivals are dropping daily!

Bedroom Arrangement Tips

Here are some general tips for arranging your bedroom furniture:

  • Choose the most practical wall for your headboard to rest up against. As is often the case with small bedrooms, there may only be 1 wall in your room that makes sense for the placement of the headboard or the head of the bed. Locate the wall that works best for this purpose and build your layout around it.

  • Center your headboard along the wall for symmetry. If you want to be able to walk around all the sides of your bed, centering the bed along the wall with space left on either side may be the best choice. If you choose this option, try to keep the rest of your layout relatively symmetrical and balanced.

  • Align the bed toward 1 side of the room to accommodate large furniture. Pick the most practical wall to press your headboard against, but instead of centering the bed along the wall, slide it over to one side. This may leave some extra space in front of your closet door, or it might allow you to squeeze a larger piece of furniture along the opposite wall.

  • Push the bed into a corner to open up the floor space. This arrangement can be perfect for long, narrow spaces. Place your bed in the corner of your choice, with the headboard and 1 side of your bed touching the walls. This will leave the rest of the room open for other furniture items.

  • Situate the head of the bed beneath the lowest part of a sloped ceiling. Sloped ceilings can make small rooms feel even more compressed, but proper placement of your bed will alleviate this issue. Push the head of the bed along the wall beneath the low point of the slope. In most cases, this is practical because you’ll be lying down and won’t miss the lost headspace.

  • Arrange other pieces of furniture around the bed, as the bed is the most important part of the room. Other pieces of furniture like dressers, nightstands, desks, accent chairs, or any other desired pieces are placed after the bed is in the perfect position for the most ideal sleep!

Advantages of a Leather Sofa
Advantages of a Leather Sofa

If you are thinking about adding a leather sofa to your living room, you have come to the right place! Not only does Home Furniture Plus Bedding have a wide selection of
Leather Sofas to choose from, but we can also provide you with a few advantages to opening a leather sofa to make the choice a bit easier!

Durable & Easy to Clean

Leather has always been regarded as a valuable material for its durability. Quality leather sofas, like the ones sold here at Home Furniture Plus Bedding, undergo stringent modern tanning processes that make them resistant to cracking, sagging, or peeling. This allows them to last longer than conventional fabric sofas. In addition, leather is a flexible and strong material, making it resistant to tears and punctures. Castlery leather sofas and armchairs are made of either full-grain or top-grain leather, so they are not only durable but also age well. Leather sofas are resistant to stains and spills. No more spill scares! This winning quality makes cleaning and maintenance a breeze, especially for families with young children.

Prolonged Comfort

Leather sofas have unique natural fibers that allow them to retain its shape and appearance for a long time without looking worn. Instead, it becomes supple and soft, remaining comfortable with frequent use. The breathability of genuine leather also allows both heat and cold to dissipate quickly, hence leather couches easily adapt to the temperature of the room they’re in.

Hypoallergenic

For those who get allergies easily, you’ll be glad to know that leather sofas do not harbor dust mites or pet fur! Leather also repels dust, so it’s easy to keep it spick and span. This is why leather couches are so popular among those sensitive to common allergens.

Join us in recognizing Sickle Cell Awareness Month

Tessa Anderson understands what it is like to have 2 of her beloved family members fighting every day to stay healthy.  Tessa, who works in our accounting office in Lake Charles, LA, has dedicated much of her free time and energy to working with Sickle Cell support groups and fundraising events.  Many of Tessa's co-workers have also supported her efforts by participating in Hydration Campaigns and Walk/Run events.

In a previous article, Tessa shared that “every now and then I get a little weak, and I get upset because I feel like we are battling it by ourselves.  It’s exciting to work for a company that does a lot for so many different causes… It makes the battle a little easier.”

Quick Facts about Sickle Cell Disease from the CDC

  • According to the CDC, Sickle Cell Disease is a group of inherited blood disorders
  • Healthy red blood cells are round and move through blood vessels carrying oxygen throughout the body
  • In Sickle Cell Disease, the red blood cells become hard and stick and C-shaped like a ‘sickle’
  • Sickle cells may stick in small blood vessels and block the flow of blood and oxygen
  • Sickle cell blockages cause repeated episodes of pain, organ damage, infections and even strokes

Sickle Cell is a painful genetic blood disorder impacting more than 100,000 people in the United States. With 2.5 million carrying the trait, it is the most inherited blood disorder in America.

Before joining our team, Cody worked at a local competitor for two and a half years.

What do you like best about your job?

“I like the responsibility of being a team leader. It’s very rewarding to see our team succeed and accomplish great things. We’re in a much better position than we used to be.”

Larry Domingue, Beaumont store manager, adds, “Cody has been a great addition to our store. He is a man of few words, but don’t let that fool you. Cody is very observant and in tune with what is going on in many areas around the store. As a delivery driver, Cody was who we utilized on the long-haul deliveries to Central and West Texas. He never complained, and customers always enjoyed him as much as we did. For many years, he excelled as the go-to person for long hauls or difficult stops. Three and a half years ago, we promoted him to a supervisory role. He continues to work very hard in his role. Cody is so very eager to learn new things and contribute more to the store’s success.
