Recliner Chairs

Recliners are a durable and popular seating option for many living rooms.

There isn’t quite anything like kicking your feet up in your favorite recliner at the end of a day, or taking a nap after a big meal. Recliners are a staple in many homes, and there are plenty of makes and models available to suit your comfort and personal style.

The first recliner was owned by Napoleon III. They started being made commercially in the 1920’s, and they have become a common furniture item in many homes and living rooms. The comfortable back, cushy seat and supportive arm rests help someone to feel cozy. The foot rest lets someone to relax and put their feet up at the end of the day, while watching a game, listening to music or taking a nap. Many armchairs have drink holders for convenience, with other having additional features.

Comfort

Recliners are distinguished by type of material and by the type of foam that is used. Some use upholstery, while others use leather. The foam varies according to the density and type of foam. Most furniture uses foam with a density rating of .9 to 2.25. The higher the rating, the more dense the foam is. It’s recommended to get a chair with a density rating of 1.9 or higher.

Another comfort feature you may want to consider when choosing your recliner is the how the chaise or leg area of the recliner is designed. A pad-over-chaise with no-gap design allows the footrest and the seat to be a single upholstered component.

Rocking Recliners

Rocking recliners are one kind of recliner that rocks back and forth on a base. When they are upright, they rock back and forth. The back leans with the use of a lever. Rocking recliners are popular with nursing mothers or people who enjoy the soothing back and forth motion of a rocking recliner.

Other kinds of recliners lean back with a push back model that is a modern adjustment to the traditional lever model.

Wall Huggers

Wall hugger recliners are made to save space and are a good choice for small living rooms. They are specially made to not damage the wall and to provide a reclining chair option for places that don’t have a lot of space.

Specialty Recliners

Specialty recliners have enhanced features and functions that might be appealing to some customers. There are massage recliners that provide vibration and rolling motion that can ease muscles and provide tension release for someone. They are different from massage chairs. Some offer heat and vibration for the feet and arms, while others are focused on the back area.

High Leg Recliners

These have wood legs, and at first glance they don’t even look like a recliner. These might be a good choice for someone who wants to have a living room with a modern design.

Swivel Recliners

As well as leaning back, swivel recliners can rotate on its base. Users can rotate 360 degrees, and it can be a great addition to any living room. The rotating ability makes it easier to have conversations, enjoy watching television or even in the office for a comfortable and sturdy reading chair.

Size and Shape

Be sure to check the weight limits and the length of the chair. You’ll want a chair that can accommodate the dimensions of the person who will be using it the most. Ideally, you’ll take them with you so they can help to pick it up.

The Frame

Not all recliners are made the same. Some have an interior frame that is made from hardwood like poplar or birch, but it is a lot more expensive than some of the cheaper models. Others use plywood, which is a good alternative. The hardware of the reclining chairs vary, and sturdy metal screws provide a durable and reliable chair.

Reclining chairs are available in many traditional and modern makes and models. Whether you want a simple style that you are familiar with, or are looking for one with heating and massage options, you can find the right chair for you or your family. Learning more about the available recliners can help you find a great chair.
